Why are the bands Smashmouth and Nickelback often used as punchlines?

They were overplayed. Even when people were sick of hearing them, they were still overplayed. It's as though every single DJ in the country got drunk simultaneously and got on a lame band kick. I can say a little more for Nickelback than Smashmouth because I really hated the guys vocals on top of the cheesy late 90's tap on the steering wheel to the beat on the way to Taco Bell music.
